The Spartan Community Center is a non-profit organization that impacts the lives of individuals across the Hazelwood community focusing on inclusivity, while fostering a culture of health and wellbeing.
Hazelwood is a neighborhood on the city’s east side which takes its name from the hazelnut trees which once flourished along the nearby Monongahela River. What is now Spartan was originally an elementary school operated by the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh. It leases space to a variety of small businesses and arts organizations.
The center also functions as the worship home of the Hot Metal Bridge Faith Community. Taking its name from an iconic Pittsburgh structure, the community was founded in 2004 by two pastors from different Christian denominations. The people who attend Hot Metal have a rich diversity of ecumenical backgrounds, landing in the same place despite being raised Evangelical, Catholic, Baptist, Mormon or Methodist.
