Wesley W. Posvar Hall is the largest academic building on the University Of Pittsburgh campus.
Commonly known locally as Pitt, the University Of Pittsburgh is a state-related research university that began in 1787. The university is comprised of 17 undergraduate and graduate schools located in various buildings in the city’s Oakland neighborhood — effectively making it Pitt’s campus.
Posvar Hall was completed in 1978 and sits on the former site of Forbes Field (1909-1971), the long-time home of the Pittsburgh Pirates professional baseball team. It was constructed with a limestone exterior and designed in a style of architecture call Brutish. This style was popular from the 1950s to the 1970s and is notable for its massive, fortress-like appearance. Originally called the Forbes Quadrangle, it was renamed in 1999 to honor the late university chancellor Wesley W. Posvar (1925-2001). Several Forbes Field artifacts remain.
The building houses classrooms, lecture halls, computer labs, administrative offices and a food court.
