Opened in 1916, the William Penn Hotel is considered the most luxurious hotel in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
The hotel is named in honor of English real estate entrepreneur and philosopher William Penn (1644-1718) for whom Pennsylvania is also named. Local industrialist Henry Clay Frick (1849-1919) spearheaded the William Penn’s development. It’s decorated in magnificent and ornate art deco style with a stunning lobby, impressive ballroom and nearly 600 lush guest rooms and suites.
Some of the most famous people of the last century have stayed at the William Penn, including US President John F. Kennedy (1917-1963) and comedian Bob Hope (1903-2003). Musician, bandleader and television personality Lawrence Welk (1903-1992) first used a bubble-making machine at the hotel, which became one of Welk’s signature elements. That original maker remains at the William Penn.
Today, it’s owned by Omni Hotels & Resorts (and officially named Omni William Penn).
