German vocalist Matthias Goerne (pictured) joins the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in a program that features a signature work by a quintessentially American composer.

Founded in 1895 by British composer, conductor and organist Frederic Archer (1838-1901), the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one of America’s oldest and most prestigious orchestras having performed around the world including a 2004 concert for Pope John Paul II (1920-2005).

That work is “Lincoln Portrait,” written in 1942 by American composer and pianist Aaron Copland (1900-1990). A celebration of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), it is an inspiring mixture of music and narration utilizing Lincoln’s own words.

Aaron Copland was a remarkable talent who began writing songs at age eight. He also defied social norms by living as an openly gay man.
