This modest, three-story structure was the childhood home Pulitzer Prize winning Pittsburgh playwright August Wilson (1945-2005), whose plays depict the comic and tragic aspects of the African-American experience.
The brick building has retail space on street level and residential above. It was erected in the 1840s and was Wilson’s home for the first 13 years of his life. Its located in the city’s Hill District, a historically African-American neighborhood with a rich cultural and social legacy. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places, the federal government’s official list of districts, sites, buildings, structures and objects deemed worthy of preservation.
It’s currently undergoing renovation and restoration by the Daisy Wilson Artist Community, a nonprofit that promotes the literary and social legacy of August Wilson and is named in honor of his mother.
