Constructed in 1836, the Burke was Pittsburgh’s first major (and now oldest) office building.
The Burke Building was designed by Pittsburgh’s first professional architect, John Chislett (1800-1869), in the Greek Revival style. Popular in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Greek Revival was inspired by ancient Greek structures with columns being a common element.
An impressive interior includes a handsome central staircase and four fireplaces original to the building.
It was initially created for real estate attorneys Robert and Andrew Burke. Over the decades, the Burke Building has been used for everything from a photographic studio to a restaurant.
