The Cathedral Of Learning is an iconic part of the University Of Pittsburgh campus and one of Pittsburgh’s most distinctive landmarks.
Commonly known locally as Pitt, the University of Pittsburgh is a state-related research university that began in 1787. The university is comprised of 17 undergraduate and graduate schools located in various buildings in the city’s Oakland neighborhood — effectively making it Pitt’s campus.
The 42-story Late Gothic Revival tower was completed in 1934 and is the tallest educational building in the Western hemisphere. It has a steel frame overlaid with Indiana limestone and has over 2,000 rooms and windows. In addition to offices, a food court and labs, the cathedral is home to the Charity Randall Theater.
Perhaps the most popular component is the collection of classrooms known as The Nationality Rooms, each depicting an ethnic group that helped build Pittsburgh.
