Mellon Square is an urban green space and the first Modernist park to be built above a parking garage.

Modernism is an artistic approach that emerged at the start of the 20th Century. It was heavily influenced by technological innovation emphasizes experimentation.

Mellon Square was created in the 1950’s at the instigation of financier and philanthropist Richard King Mellon (1899-1970). Much f its construction was financed by his family’s foundation.

The park is notable for its black, white and green geometric pavement as well as its trees and distinctive water founded.

Matters regarding Mellon Square are jointly addressed by the city and the non-profit Pittsburgh Parks Conservatory.
