An historic landmark, St. Nicholas Church was constructed in 1922 as a worship and social center for Roman Catholic Church members of Croatian descent. It was built to replace a 1900 structure that was destroyed by fire.

Croatia has existed in many forms (independent duchy, kingdom and republic as well as part of other countries) in South-Central Europe since at least the 7th Century CE.  The people known as Croats are a Slavic ethnic group with an even longer history.

St. Nicholas is named in honor of Greek bishop Nicholas of Bari (270CE-343CE), the inspiration for the beloved Christmas character Santa Claus.

The church is most notable for the magnificent murals created between 1937 and 1941 by Croation-American artist Maksimilijan “Maxo” Vanka (1889-1963).
