The Stephen Foster Memorial is a performing arts center and museum dedicated to groundbreaking American composer Stephen Foster (1826-1864) and is adjacent to the University Of Pittsburgh’s iconic Cathedral Of Learning.

Commonly known locally as Pitt, the University of Pittsburgh is a state-related research university that began in 1787. The university is comprised of 17 undergraduate and graduate schools located in various buildings in the city’s Oakland neighborhood — effectively making it Pitt’s campus.

The 42-story Late Gothic Revival tower was completed in 1934 and is the tallest educational building in the Western hemisphere. It has a steel frame overlaid with Indiana limestone and has over 2,000 rooms and windows. Adjacent to the cathedral — and constructed of the same materials — the memorial archives and celebrates the work of composer Stephen Foster (1826-1864) is often called “the father of American music.”

Foster wrote quintessentially American songs that remaining popular today, most inspired by the music of African-Americans who were former slaves and performing in traveling minstral shows. The museum includes manuscripts, copies of over 200 of Foster’s musical compositions, examples of recordings, songsters, broadside, programs, books, various memorabilia and several musical instruments, including one of Foster’s pianos.

It is also home to two performance spaces used by the university’s theater department.
