Also known as USX Tower and as the Steel Building, the 64-story U.S. Steel Tower is the tallest skyscraper in Pittsburgh and among the tallest in the United States.

The United States Steel Corporation was founded in 1901 through the merger of four companies to create what is now an integrated steel producer. Between 1986 and 2001 it was known as USX Corporation. After more than a century, U.S. Steel remains the largest domestically owned steel company in America and their headquarters continues to anchor the building.

Completed in 1970, U.S. Steel Tower has many interesting architectural elements and engineering innovations. Its triangular shape is designed to echo the shape of Downtown Pittsburgh, which is nicknamed “The Golden Triangle.” The tower is constructed with COR-TEN, a group of steel alloys developed by U.S. Steel that eliminate the need for painting and better survive the natural elements. It’s also the first building to have liquid-filled fireproofed columns and is unique to have redundant systems in case of a power or plumbing failure.

Outside and facing Grant Street is a courtyard commonly referred to as a plaza where seating for al fresco dining and events take place, including a popular annual Christmas display.

Another major tenant is the University Of Pittsburgh Medical Center, whose logo — comprised of the letters UPMC — dominate the building’s top. Leasing and related matters are handled by the commercial real estate firm CBRE.
