Highland Park is a large, 580-acre municipal park that anchors a popular city neighborhood that is also called Highland Park.

Opened in 1893, the park’s main entrance is easily identifiable by a pair of bronze sculptures each atop a separate column created by Italian-American sculptor Giuseppe Moretti (1857-1935).

Like most of the city’s East End in the late 19th century, Highland Park was farm land and the original farmhouse remains as park offices and summer campsite. By the early 20th century, it became a comfortable and prosperous part of Pittsburgh.

Highland Park is also home to the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium.

The park contains two of the city’s large water reservoirs, picnic groves, the city’s only long-course swimming pool, four sand volleyball courts, tennis courts, walking trails and two children’s playgrounds — as well as a babbling brook and even a lake for fishing.

Highland Park receives additional support from the nonprofit Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy.
