Kennywood is an historic amusement park and one of the most beloved entities in southwestern Pennsylvania. It is one of only two amusement parks listed on the National Register Of Historic Places.

The park opened in 1898 and was originally intended to be a destination for passengers of the Monongahela Street Railway in the southwest suburb of West Mifflin. It’s located on the site of the 1755 Battle Of The Monongahela, a key moment in what historians call the French & Indian War (1754-1763).

The French & Indian War was an extension of the bitter Seven Year’s War (1754-1763) between the Kingdom Of Great Britain and the Kingdom Of France to determine which would be the dominate power in the Western World.

Kennywood takes its name from the farmer who owned the property, Charles K. Kenny, who allowed picnics to take place in an area nicknamed “Kenny’s Grove.” The park embraces its rich history by maintaining a nostalgic atmosphere while smoothly melding traditional rides with modern ones. Its especially known for its wooden roller coasters, including the Jack Rabbit, which opened in 1921 and is one of the oldest such rides in the world.
