Pittsburgh Friends Meeting is headquartered in a picturesque former mansion in the city’s Shadyside neighborhood near University Of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University. They are members of The Religious Society Of Friends, better known as Quakers.
The central doctrine of Quakerism is the priesthood of all believers — that is, the belief that ordinary Christians share a common priesthood. Nevertheless, some Quaker congregations do have formal pastors. The Pittsburgh Friends doesn’t; they gather at the Meeting House in silence expectantly for the Holy Spirit to inspire them.
English religious dissenter George Fox (1624-1691) founded The Religious Society Of Friends in 1652. He and his followers emphasized a personal and direct religious connection with Christ, acquired through both direct religious experience and the reading and studying of the Bible. They term Quaker was coined by a British contemporary because Fox encouraged people to tremble at the word of God.
Over the centuries, Quakers have often been leaders in progressive issues such as the abolition of African Slavery in the United States.
The Pittsburgh Friends’ renovated mansion is a handsome stone structure offering classrooms, meeting rooms and even a music room. Many organizations use the facilities for their own programs.
