The Pittsburgh Renaissance Festival is a colorful, fun and engaging re-creation of an English village during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603) on a former farm near West Newton, Pennsylvania.

West Newton is a small town of about 2,600 people located south east of Pittsburgh in rural Westmoreland County. The town traces its roots to a collection of pioneers who settled there in 1788. West Newton’s downtown has some interesting, historic buildings.

Every year, the festival is held on this abandoned farm that had been strip mined. It has been landscaped and mock Elizabethan buildings (especially the front gate) have been constructed. The result is a fictional village called Morelandshire.
