Bordering three prominent city neighborhoods, Schenley Park is one of Pittsburgh’s largest and most popular urban oases.
The 300-acre park was created in 1889 thanks to a gift by local heiress and philanthropist Mary Schenley (1826-1903). Today it has 13 tennis courts, an all-weather running track, a soccer field, ice skating rink, public swimming pool and an 18-hole disc golf course.
One of the park’s most popular sites is Flagstaff Hill, where picnics, concerts and even outdoor movies are screened. Another is Panther Hollow, a wooded valley that features a man-made lake.
A visitor’s center is operated by the Pittsburgh Parks Conservatory, a non-profit organization committed to restoring and improving the city’s parks.
