Contemporary artist Kara Walker has created fifteen large scale prints to form this exhibition inspired by historic events chronicled in Harper’s Magazine.

First published in 1869, Harper’s is the oldest continuously published monthly magazine in the United States. It is a flagship publication of the media company founded by brothers James Harper (1795-1869) and Fletcher Harper (1806-1877). Harper’s extensively covered the American Civil War (1861-1865) resulting in an impressive collection of articles, engravings and maps. This collection was published as two books in 1866.

Kara Walker overlays enlargements of woodcut plates with her black silkscreen cutout figures in solid black silhouette. In doing so, she brings to light experiences of racism that were often omitted or merely hinted at in traditional historical narratives.
