Monroeville Mall is a large, historic indoor shopping mall located in one of Pittsburgh’s major suburbs situated east of the city. The suburb (and thus, the mall) is named in honor of Joel Monroe (1793-1877), the region’s first postmaster. He owned a farm on what is now part of Monroeville.
The two-story mall opened in 1969 and has been renovated many times since. Its anchored by the national department stores Macy’s and J.C. Penny and feature amenities such as a food court and multi-screen movie theater.
Monroeville Mall is best known as the filming location for the 1978 horror classic “Dawn Of The Dead.”
