The National Aviary is America’s only independent indoor nonprofit aviary, located inside Allegheny Commons on the city’s historic North Side.

Created in 1867, Allegheny Commons is a network of urban parks that together comprise the oldest public park in Pittsburgh. The park was originally free grazing land that was converted into a central park for the residents of Allegheny City (1788-1907), which was a separate municipality before being annexed by Pittsburgh.

The National Aviary’s diverse collection comprises more than 500 birds representing more than 150 species from around the world, many of them threatened or endangered in the wild. The large walk-through exhibits create an experience unlike any other — an intimate, up-close interaction between visitors and free-flying birds, including opportunities to hand-feed and meet many species rarely found in zoos anywhere else in the world.

It has been awarded an honorary “National” status by the United States Congress.
